He can use his fixed retirement income

Savings at the pump meant 28-year-old Zumba instructor Cinthia Gonzalez can buy other things, like clothes for her 7-year-old son Brandon Mendoza, who watched her fill up the family’s 90s-era Honda Accord.

Driving to gyms across Orange County and taking her husband to work in Irvine adds up, the Tustin resident said, but things are a little easier now.

“We waste a lot of money on gas,” said Gonzalez, who usually spends about $30 every four days on fuel. “I have saved a lot of money since it’s lower.”

For 69-year-old Carl Cruz, spending less to fill up his 2001 Dodge Dakota means he can use his fixed retirement income on other things – like food.

“The less it costs for fuel, the more I get to eat,” Cruz said, who filled his tank Wednesday for about $43. “It’s great, compared to what we were paying a month ago.”

But Cruz said he’s convinced prices won’t stay low.

“It’ll go back up; we’re doomed,” Cruz said.

Orange resident Mark Merriott put $20 in the tank of his blue 2012 Ford Focus, which filled it further than usual. Merriott said he came to Grand Gas because it was the cheapest he could find on GasBuddy.

When asked if he thought prices would stay low, Merriott chuckled.

“It all depends, I think, on what our government does and obviously what happens abroad,” Merriott said.
